When visiting Peru I was determined to go into the Amazon Rainforest. After doing a little research Iquitos looked to be the best, and easiest, way about it. With no roads leading to the city, the only way is flying in, over the incredible sight of the dense rainforest below. Not sure I’ve ever seen anything like it! And Iquitos is nothing like I’d thought I’d find in a rainforest either. The central square with its rubber boom architecture is such a surprising and stunning sight, and very different from the cityscape you see catching a ride up and down the streets in a mototaxi. Despite the latter usually being my preferred surroundings when travelling, but with few tourists in sight, sitting down for a cold drink in the heat taking in the beauty of the central square was really nice. Emerging from the cafe with a Lima restaurant recommendation from Angus, the Aussie playwright, was not bad either – can’t thank him enough for pointing me in the direction of the world class Central Restaurante 🙂 Happily I headed in the direction of the Amazon riverbanks for some nice waterway views, just a short walk away.
It must have been so amazing to see the rainforest from above – wow!
It was quite the sight! So dense, and nothing but forest, and a river here and there.
I am sure this was an experience! I know a person from Iquitos and he has some really good stories to tell about the place where he grew up. The funny thing is that Iquitos is so different that he does not seems to have a lot in common with Peruvians from other areas. #WanderfulWednesday
This was amazing! How cool! I kind of get that, considering the city is so “isolated” from the rest of the world, but I didn’t know.
Flying in to the rainforest sounds incrdeible and I bet the view looked beautiful. But I am curious about rubber boom architecture. What is it? Thanks
With the demand/production of rubber came the Europeans and their architecture, and some buildings are still standing, in great shape.
That would be so cool to fly into a city over the rainforest! I can only imagine how beautiful it is!
It was both cool and beautiful 🙂 It’s huge and dense.
Word of mouth recommendations are always the best! What an amazing view from the air! #WanderfulWednesday
True x 2 🙂
