Hotel Arthur sure needs a makeover. It is dated, and worn down in places, but I’ve seen worse, and wasn’t too discouraged. They are in the process of renovating, which could mean some noise, but I didn’t notice any. Some parts, like the restaurant / breakfast room, appear to be done. If you can look past the tired bits, this is a good place to stay. It is centrally located, just a block away from the bus and train station, and the busy streets of the city. However, in a quiet area still, with necessities like a grocery store and subway station close by. Also a few restaurants, and a movie theatre, and the botanical garden is across the street. I found central hotels in Helsinki to be quite expensive, in relation to what you get, so I guess you pay for location. Other things on the plus side. The breakfast selection was surprisingly good – I got to try the Finnish rice pie 🙂 You can rent a private sauna – unfortunately I wasn’t in the mood 😀 – for 10 euros per person – that’s a steal! They also have rooms with private sauna.
