National Library & Oodi Central Library: Old vs. New

national library helsinki finland

The National Library of Finland and Oodi Helsinki Central Library are very different, but both well deserving of a visit. One is fairly quickly done. The other you can actually spend hours at, depending on how you want to make use of it.

More on Helsinki.

National Library of Finland

Compared to the inside, the outside doesn’t scream come have a look. However, you should! The two main halls are beautiful. Love the ceilings! There’s also two reading rooms, style wise in the same vein. Didn’t enter in respect for those studying. Otherwise you are free to roam as you please, access the upper floors and the mezzanine. Could be you can join a tour. Entrance is free. You are asked to leave your coat on unattended coat stands, opposite to the security guard.

Oodi: Helsinki Central Library

This place is far from a regular library. More like a place to hang out. I like the concept! Across the three floors, you’ll find gaming rooms, cell offices for rent, music studios, kitchen for arranging cooking classes, creative seating areas, sewing stations, summer open terrace, photography and editing studio, and cafes, among other things. When I visited, a concert suddenly materialised. Safe to say, this isn’t quiet surroundings. If you are in need, they have the traditional reading room too. Oodi is a huge venue, dressed in modern architecture both inside and out.
