After arriving at City Gate Hotel in Vilnius, Lithuania, I could conclude that this was the hotel with the best location, out of the ones I had considered. It is located right outside the city gate (Gate of Dawn), just across the street from it. A short walk and you’re in the heart of the old town. It is also a short (10 min) walk from both the train station and bus station. As the heading says, this is a budget hotel, but it is not the most “budget” I’ve stayed at. I found it more than adequate. The bed is on the hard side, but that’s it. Breakfast was included, but I never made it down in time 😀 There is a grocery store a few meters away, the food market too, and a great restaurant next door.
I had read on TripAdvisor that bus no. 88 going from the airport, would stop very close to the hotel. When I arrived it turned out the bus didn’t leave often, so I decided not to wait for the next departure, but give the train a try. The train station is not far away, but not in plain sight. Just follow the signs, and you’ll be fine. It’ll take you 5 minutes max. You can buy a ticket on board, also by credit card. Or on their website or app.
For city transportation needs, like buses and street cars, I found the Trafi app to be easy to use. Only downside is you can’t buy single tickets on it. Your purchase needs to be minimum 5 euros, and a 30 minute ride costs 0.65 euro only. Weird. You can buy tickets onboard for 1 euro, or download another app. Remember to validate the ticket after purchase from driver. Bus stop is a block or so away.
