The citadel in Victoria can be spotted from afar on Gozo, as it sits on top of a hill in the centre of town. It looks intriguing as it rises above, but in reality I was not too impressed… After walking up, you are met by a solid fortress facade. Stepping inside the gates you immediately find yourself at the best spot, in front of the cathedral at Cathedral Square. Here’s also the Bishop’s Palace, court house, and former Governor’s Palace located. Aside from this, there are narrow streets and squares, ruins and anonymous looking buildings, and good views of the town and the island. There’s suppose to be two chapels, and several museums: an old prison, Gozo Nature Museum, Gozo Museum of Archaeology, a museum connected to the cathedral, and the Folklore Museum in the form of a historic house. I didn’t spot any… I saw a gallery, a couple of shops, and the visitor’s centre, which has won awards. Latter could be worth it, I didn’t stop by. Like in Valletta and Mdina, the ditch has been renovated, and turned into a leisure area. Better jobs done in the capital and former capital respectively. I read somewhere visiting after dark is nice, so maybe that’s an idea to go with.
