Cabo da Roca: Westernmost Point of Mainland Europe

how to visit cabo da roca westernmost point europe portugal

Cape Roca, one of the extreme points of Europe, and Portugal, is an easy day trip from Lisbon, on public transportation. Just require a teeny tiny bit of planning, and it is so worth it. I wasn’t all in on visiting the cape being a great way to spend my vacation time, but got convinced by a fellow traveller I met in the Azores. Decided to give it a go, and I was proven wrong. Admittedly there isn’t much happening out there, so you need to be into unspoilt scenery. The highlights are the shoreline, waves crashing in, the cliffs and the beaches below. There’s a lighthouse, not open to the public, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and a tourist information office. In other words, this headland visit can be quickly done, but you can also explore more, by hiking the trails atop the cliffs, go both north and south, some leading you down to the beaches.

If you are travelling from Lisbon, first you need to get on the train to Cascais. From there you take the bus, from the bus terminal, at the shopping mall, next to the train station. Easy to find. Also easy to figure out which bus stop to wait at. Marked (line) 403. Leaves every 30 minutes (as from Cabo da Roca). You’ll travel on Scott URB. You pay upon boarding, a few euros. Then you ride for approx. 20 minutes, through residential neighborhoods, small villages, suburbs, and countryside. You can take the bus from Sintra too. The bus runs Sintra – Cabo da Roca – Cascais, and vice versa. I looked into doing this trip on the same day as I visited Sintra. It could have been done, but it felt rushed.
