Pure Happiness

central hotel funchal madeira portugal

The feeling after leaving a wintry Norway, and stepping into your temporary digs in Funchal, Madeira, – removing the curtains to discover a balcony with great views, and feeling the warmth of sun on your face when you open the door. A great welcome to Hotel do Centro 🙂 Ok, pure happiness might not be an accurate description of the accommodation itself, but it is definitely a good choice. As the name suggests it is in the centre of town, a short walk to most things, but on a quiet street still. Conveniently kinda on the border between the old town (Zona Velha) and the newer part. The waterfront a little bit further away, but not much of a bother. Grocery store next door. Perfect as the hotel breakfast selection was not impressive. The room is average, with the best feature being the balcony, small, but room to sit outside, enjoying a hill view and a glimpse of the ocean. There are three beds, but it’d be crowded with that many people. Staff at front desk is varying. Some helpful, others a little less. Could be dependent on how comfortable the person is with speaking English, just my thoughts.

AIRPORT TRANSFER Apparently there is an airport express bus. Before leaving I didn’t find a lot of info on it, and what I found didn’t inspire confidence in it being a solid option. When exiting the terminal building, I didn’t spot any bus, and not being in the mood of figuring things out, I took a taxi – expensive! Unfortunately no Uber. Be aware some taxis do not accept credit cards. Was considering taking the bus on my return trip, but realised my stop would be the last in a long line of stops, so could already be full when it arrived. Not willing to risk a stressful return airport transfer.
