Not so much a field, but still apparently the place where viking clans fought it out over the rule of Norway in 872. Harald Fairhair was victorious, and became the ruler of a united kingdom. “Sverd i fjell” is the monument to commemorate this battle at Hafrsfjord, outside Stavanger. Three huge swords sat on top of rocks, representing peace, unity, and freedom. Rumour said it wasn’t worthwhile, but I liked it! I do agree there’s not much else to do, than glance up at the towering creation, unless it’s summertime, and you can chill on the adjacent beach, or are into exploring the trails along the fjord.
This place is easy to get to on public transportation. Take bus no. 16 from downtown Stavanger. Get off at Madlaleiren, walk straight ahead, and after a short walk, the swords appear on your right side. Tip: cheaper to buy 24h ticket than two single tickets
