Backstube I first came across on a Sunday afternoon at Tøyen Torg in Oslo. I could smell it before I could see it. And what a magnificent smell! I could feel my mouth watering despite having had tea and cake a minute prior. Of course I had to stop by the already busy shop. Stepping inside I was surprised to see it is a bakery unlike the regular Norwegian bakeries. It looks more like some of the bake shops I’ve visited abroad. You serve yourself, picking whatever products you lean towards, and the price, that’s definitely not Norwegian. It’s cheap! Nowhere will you get this fresh goods at that cost. For foreign visitors this is a treasure chest 🙂 They have a more than decent selection, from bread and buns to sweet puff pastry and savoury snacks, both hot and cold. I love to linger by the shelfs pondering over what to get 😀
Getting to Tøyen Torg is not the most straight forward, but since my first visit, branches have popped up in the city centre and other neighbourhoods.
Update: Just visited the Oslo City branch, which is at a shopping mall, more or less next to the main train station, and it appeared to be other prices, higher ones…
Update 2: Backstube has closed a deal with Oslo Gardermoen Airport. Now you’ll find several outlets throughout the airport, offering a cheaper alternative. Food at the airport is expensive, and value for money is low. Wagamama at the arrivals floor is a good option.
