Antwerp was the first city I visited in Belgium. Could be that’s why it became my top choice. Another reason could be that, at this point in time, this was English speaking territory, while Brussels was all French, alienating me. Since, Brussels has luckily for me, improved in that regard. Size might be an additional factor. I like the smaller appearance. I like wandering the streets, some narrow and cobblestoned, twisting and turning, until I’m at Grote Markt with flag filled city hall, hand throwing fountain, and stunning front-gabled buildings. On my last visit I also enjoyed a walk along the Scheldt riverbank promenade, out by Het Steen. That fortress looks spooky night, and day. When I get tired of sightseeing, it’s easy to find my way around to good shopping. You are at diamond central, and a part of the world fashion scene. Arriving and leaving from the most beautiful train station adds to the appeal too.

My favorite too since first visiting in 1981. Many changes but the Brabo fountain that just splashes onto the pavement, the crystal dome on the train station was renovated, and all the cheap hotels where I used to stay are now 3-4 stars. Thanks for the update. Cheers
Wow, that’s a long time ago. Yes, I can imagine things have changed. Lucky me had someone fix me a room at the hotel opposite the train station, frontal view of the beautiful building from my room. Realised on returning that whatever room I booked online, I got the same room when I checked in – that’s customer service!
