Kroa

where to eat senjastua restaurant silsand senja northern norway arctic

That’s what we called it when I grew up. The roadside diner on Silsand, Senja, which through the years has evolved into this superb restaurant serving traditional dishes from Northern Norway. Along with a new and highly improved menu, a new name, Senjastua, but I still call it Kroa 😀 When you have a look at what’s on offer, it should come as no surprise, considering where in the world you have landed, that there’s a lot of fish on there. Crispy fried cod tongues. Grilled stockfish – their signature dish. Panfried salmon. Smoked cod. Fried pollock. Boknafesk, which is steamed stockfish. There’s also whale steak, and at Christmas, a traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner platter. For those who already feel a long way away from home, they offer more regular fares as well, so do not be alarmed 🙂 Whatever you get, you’re in for a treat!

Senjastua is the notched building on your lefthand side, when you enter the island via the mainland bridge – that is if you do not turn right immediately after crossing over.

Norwegian lesson: Roadside diner is veikro in Norwegian. In Northern Norway we shorten it, kro. The definite form in our dialect is kroa. There you go. A little insight to why I call it Kroa 🙂
