My day of the dead. At La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires.
Thinking about it, I’ve come across a few cemeteries while travelling around. This is actually the only one I’ve gone looking for. They are more different than I expected, it just now hit me. The “quirkiest” one might have been the one on Easter Island, but the most elegant one is definitely this one. No wonder it’s been named one of the most gorgeous in the world on a couple of occasions, at least. It is big. It is beautiful. Several thousand gravesites. Some elaborate with sizeable statues. Others a cross only, more anonymously squeezed in between mausoleums. There’s old run down ones. And well-maintained ones. All spread out like city blocks parted by narrow alleys. Favourite feature – the mausoleum domes! The colours made the place shine a little bit brighter.
As the name indicates, it is located in Recoleta neighbourhood. Check opening times. I have a tendency to not, and that made me have to come back the day after.
Going down the stairs… Come on in 😀
This is a beautiful cemetery to visit. Have you seen Evita’s grave?
Yes, it is. And not very busy, at least when I visited. No – I didn’t go looking for it 🙂
Not busy sounds particularly great.:) You have visited some really amazing places. Perito Moreno is a dream of mine. Love reading your blog.
Not busy is always good 😀 Perito Moreno was really cool in that you can get up close and personal without being on a packed boat. Thanks!
