The crater of the extinct volcano Rano Kau, and the ceremonial village of Orongo sitting on top of it, I hadn’t decided whether or not I wanted to visit while on Easter Island. With other plans falling through, I ended up going with a Chilean couple I met on the flight over. If I was to make a new list of things I wanted to do while on the Pacific island, the crater would have been among the top things – it is really stunning! My host kind of insisted I’d go. I was a bit reluctant. Now I know why he said you must, when I said I might 😀 Orogono is ok, not a can’t miss, but from there you get a superb view of the Pacific Ocean and the small islets that was the aim of game – the Birdman ceremony. Views of the crater you can get from different spots, from Orongo, from a viewing point further down the road, or you can walk large parts of the rim of the crater. We followed the sometimes invisible trail to the lookout point, where the taxi was picking us up. It is steep in places, so bring appropriate footwear.
We had a taxi driver take us there, and pick us up later. Got dropped off at the visitor centre, the entrance to Orongo.
It’s so great when you get recommendations from people. Bet you’re glad you followed the advice of these people. Thanks for sharing on #farawayfiles
Yes, I am 🙂
