VIDEO: Oslo Waterfront: Aker Brygge & Tjuvholmen

what to do see aker brygge tjuvholmen neighbourhood oslo norway

Aker Brygge has been around for a very long time. First time I visited was back in 1989. Things were still under construction, but a gallery had already set its roots. First time I was introduced to art I didn’t understand, a bricklayer’s trowel glued to a black canvas. This Oslo waterfront area has definitely come a long way since then, and during summer months the place is teeming with life, and, oppositely, in winter, it turns into a very quiet neighbourhood. People’s offices are here, people live here, but most of all people flock here to enjoy the restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops, and the chance to relax seaside in the sun. A few years back an extension was added, Tjuvholmen. Offering even more of the same, but also a museum, hotel, city beach and bath, making the district even more popular. I do think it can get a bit too much at its fullest, but it is still nice to feel the breeze and smell the ocean 🙂

To get here, you need to step away from the main thoroughfare, Karl Johans gate. Just a couple of minutes walk. Buses and trams also service the area.

  1. Have only been near Aker Brygge catching the little ferries over to Bygdøy museums. But looks like a brilliant place to soak up the sun and take a dip in the sea come summer. Thanks for sharing with #FarawayFiles. Cheers from Copenhagen.

    1. I always forget about the ferries leaving for Bygdøy 🙂 I should do that one day, it’s probably nice.

  2. I will be visiting Oslo, soon. Would keep this in mind. Thank you very much for this. If you have anything on Bergen or Flåm anything , point me towards it. #farawayfiles

    1. Hi Usha, How fun you’re visiting Oslo! Got lots of posts on Oslo, but non on Bergen (so far, visited a couple of times) and Flåm (never been). Please do let me know if you need any help in/on Oslo, and if you wanna do/have time for coffee 🙂

      1. It was Rorbua. It was the same one we had previously visited. I even passed it, because it was nestled away. I also remember passing the DLA Piper offices, but I didn’t go in

        1. See, I’ve heard about Rorbua, but never been – I guess it’s because it is considered North Norwegian, and I usually want something else 😀 Great quality food? Is that the company you work for? You should have stopped by!

          1. No, it was a company I thought I could work for since I earned a paralegal degree and then switch to the Oslo office, permanently. I generally know the legal system is different. Finding a job that suits many of my interests I find challenging, since I’m always learning.

You could even just get the torrfisk and be fine. I decided to get the meat sampler and it was good too.

              1. Even for just an appetizer, it’s worth it! I liked the atmosphere and spoke to a Swedish waiter. I didn’t catch his name, despite wanting to have kept up with the blog. One of my blog posts are on the restaurant.

Love to hear your comment :)
