With jade having the position it does in Chinese culture, I just had to get myself a souvenir 🙂 To accomplish that task, what sounds better than the Jade Market in Kowloon, Hong Kong? Well, I definitely got what I came for, and a little bit more 🙂 – a pair of big pearl stud earrings. But my prize possession was my jade bangle. And a shopping experience that still brings a smile to my face. Because it’s not just about finding the genuine ones, as oppose to the ones that are dyed and made of glass, but you need to find the right size as well. And the right size for sure does not look like the right size… The diameter of the bangle is suppose to be the size of the distance between the outer and inner knuckle of your hand. Then the question begs, how to get the bracelet on and off. With me not understanding any Chinese, and the sales lady not understanding too much English, she grabbed my hand, and wanted to force it on. At which point I panicked and pulled my hand towards myself, thinking I would never get it off again, while the locals were laughing. In the end she showed me on herself, by the use of a plastic bag – lesson learned, no worries! Very glad they insisted on a “smaller” size – heed the advice of the locals 🙂
How to get there? Well, I walked up from the harbour, with map in hand 🙂
I think I would have done the same as you. Sort of like that ring that is a bit snug to put on but doesn’t want to come off, especially after you’ve yanked and pulled and caused your joint to swell.
It always gives me a slight panic attack, at least when it’s not mine 🙂
What a funny story. I too would be so worried if I tried on one of those bangles! I must remember that plastic bag trick next time I get a stuck bangle!
Now, in hindsight, it is a funny story 😀 Super trick!
