The Hong Kong Ferry

travel star ferry hong kong island kowloon

I guess the Star Ferry running across Victoria Harbour from Central on Hong Kong Island‘s North Shore to Kowloon, is kind of a Hong Kong icon. But is it a must-do…? Since it is part of regular city transportation, I decided to give it a go on a couple of occasions. First time I headed for the upper deck. Second time I rode on the cheaper lower deck, only to be suffocated by the exhaust fumes. No doubt it is way better on the upper deck, and the price difference is a few cents only, so it won’t come into play for a trip or two. It is a cheap way to sightsee the harbour, and get decent views of both sides of the water, but a highlight…, not so much. It’s “fun”, but not necessary. Can be an ok break from the MTR. Anyway, 10 minutes and approx 3 dollars of your life.

    1. Skyline views are always great, but for Hong Kong I liked the bird eye’s view better 🙂

  1. It looks like you should be able to get good skyline views from the water. The vintage ferry looks a bit like those in Sydney.

    1. They look a lot like the ones in Sydney 🙂 Nice skyline view, but I like the view from the Peak better.

  2. I for one, am pleased that the Star Ferry is still running. It is 40 years since my last visit to HK but I remember it with affection. I’d love to return one day but there seems to be so many places to see and so little time, and money, in which to do it.

Love to hear your comment :)
