So I wasn’t too sure about this one. Thought I could pop by for a quick look, as I was running out of things on my Hong Kong to-do list. It did sound a little bit intriguing though – a wooden building made without the use of nails… Instead an interlocking system cut into the wood is what holds it all together. And on top of that, the Chi Lin Nunnery is the world’s largest hand-made wooden building. My verdict? Some of the details put into this Buddhist temple is no doubt impressive, but I’d say the knowledge of how it is made is the most striking feature, and that is not very much in your face when looking at it… Exploring the front yard, walking through to the back yard, and have a look there, it doesn’t take much time.
The convent is located a bit off the main grid of Kowloon, but is easily reached by the metro.

These photos took me right back to visiting the Ji’ang Temple in Shanghai. I was completely fascinated by the dichotomy between the temple and the skyscrapers. I’m amazed that you got such clear photos with so few people! Aren’t the details on the roof beautiful??
Not many people decided to head out this way, which I don’t mind 🙂 Love the details!
Looks very nice to see something so traditional looking with skyscrapers in the background 😉
Totally agree!!
Must look out for this when I am there in March.
Hope you find it a bit more impressive than I did 🙂 Happy Hong Kong travels, and Happy New Year!
