Charleston City Market

This 1804 city market is hard to miss when you set foot in Charleston‘s historic district, as this is kind of what the South Carolina city centres around. Unfortunately, for me it is a generic, touristy place, at which you’ll find lots of nick-nack you don’t need, and a couple of things only you might want to bring home – like the dried okra we got to nibble on, and some of the sweetgrass decorations. A couple of the eateries we passed looked and smelled very enticing, but the long lines (badge of quality?), and full stomachs, put us off. Since we weren’t too impressed by the market offers, we instead turned our gaze towards the small shops surrounding the enclosed market sheds.

  1. I agree that many of these small city markets have become very touristy. I prefer the bigger European and South American markets where they have everything from produce to shoes, clothing to used items. It’s easy to avoid the souvenirs when there is more to choose from.

    1. I have more or less stopped buying stuff when I travel. What was a good idea at the time, is not so much when I get home, and don’t know there to put it. I’d rather taste things 🙂
