Travelling the Outer Banks in North Carolina means you have to take on a ferry, or two. Our first ride was from Hatteras Island to Ocracoke Island. A one hour ride on board the smallest ferry I believe I’ve ever come across. Space is definitely limited 🙂 I guess that’s one of the reasons why it departs every 30 minutes. There’s not that many cars that get to go in one go… With the amount of vehicles lining up, which caught us by surprise, it can take a while to get to cross. Since we had reservations on the last departure of the next ferry, we were put in the priority line, so we were able to get on the next one out – it pays to ask how things work! Once on board, with the limited space the passenger lounge is teeny tiny (restrooms down below), we preferred to stay in the car, or out on deck in the fresh air. PS! On this ferry there is no reservation needed, or possible, and no cost to be paid.
For our road trip we rented a car from Alamo Rent A Car.
