Once a year Oslo has an event called Oslo Culture Night, during which a lot of museums are open to the public, free of charge. And this is the only reason I ended up at the Historical Museum. Honestly, I didn’t even know we had one in town… While there was a special tour of the museum going on this evening – speed dating different museum inhabitants – I decided to go off by myself, and have a quick look at the five permanent exhibitions:
- The Coin Cabinet – one cool coin installation, besides that, you must be very interested in coins…
- The Egyptian Mummies – go to the museum in Cairo instead…
- The Medieval Gallery – some really nice carvings in there!
- Collapse – a really cool setup about what can happen when nature rattles our life
- The Ethnographic exhibitions – not a very exciting display about the indigenous people of the Arctic, sub-Arctic and Americas

How crowded were the exhibits? I’m always wary of the free events, but I also appreciate the allure of special museum events, particularly in the evenings. I think I would have liked to see the coin exhibit, even though I’m not terribly interested in coins – I always like to see the progression of them! #TheWeeklyPostcard
The museum is small, wherever the tailor-made event tours went, it got crammed. Since I decided to walk off on my own, I had the place more or less to myself, just made sure not to cross paths with the tours coming through 🙂 I did have a peek at the coins, and it is interesting to see what the coins looked like way back when it basically was pieces of metal banged flat with some engravings on them.
It is a shame those Ethnographic Exhibitions were not more interesting. That is a topic that would attract me and many of my friends. I guess it comes down to how the information is presented. Oh well. Appreciate your honest review. #TheWeeklyPostcard
I think it has to do with me seeing lots of these before, and bigger ones. This is a small museum, which wants to include more than they have room for, so these exhibits just become a scratch of the surface. The Arctic one is the biggest one, but I thought the design was bad, looks very old and in need of a more modern look.
It’s a cool event. I would love to see the medieval gallery.

It really is! You go see things you probably wouldn’t otherwise, and museums etc get great word of mouth, a win win 🙂
I’m never interested in speed dating…though I feel like I’d need to do something so I can reach my goal of living/working there. I sometimes feel stuck here. I’d be interested in the medieval exhibit…always fascinated by history.
Then you wouldn’t like this type of speed dating either, with an Egyptian mummy 😀 The Medieval exhibit was among the best ones.
I have considered online dating, but I’d only be interested in Norwegians around my age with a little flexibility…but I feel a duty to help my brother out too here.
Online dating is apparently the way to go these days – good luck, to both you and your brother 😀
Thanks, he at least knows it’s a goal of mine to move abroad. We would just have to figure out the legal stuff first and work to find a job. Having and monetizing my blog will help, and writing poetry collections.
Isn’t it great when you discover something interesting in your own town, close by, and you’ve never been there? This looks like a lovely museum. Glad you found it!
I wasn’t too keen when my friend dragged me along, but part of it was a good find!
