Charmed by Munich’s Old Town

old town munich germany

We have one thing in common, Adolf Hitler and I, we both feel “Munich is the city closest to my heart”. In my case, the German city closest to my heart. After visiting Berlin and Munich within the same month, and Hamburg a couple of times previously, I landed on the Bavarian capital being my absolute favourite, and the old town being my favourite area – if there is a distinction to be made between the city centre and the old town, it felt like one in the same. And that’s one of the features that appealed to be, the compactness of the city, giving off a small town feeling, a great city to make the apostles’ horses (meaning feet 🙂 ) run free. Another thing is that with the exploring comes a surprise around every corner, some buildings you architectural wise wouldn’t expect to find here. I basically just loved walking around discovering new things. When the weather is deemed to bad to spend time outside, it was really bad at times (visited in November), you can always go shopping 🙂 Great selection, including intricate Christmas ornaments. With Munich being famous for Oktoberfest, I guess it should come as no surprise when there on Sunday morning was handed out free beer at Marienplatz, to the delight of the other tourists who were out and about in the wind and snow, waiting for the City Hall Glockenspiel to go off at 11 am. I am not much of a drinker, so I more enjoyed the delicious Kaiserschmarrn (chopped pancakes) I had for lunch – introduced to me by a former work colleague I met up with. Always nice to get local tips on where to go and what to do, and what to eat 🙂

PS! Food wise. If you’re in town on a low budget, you might wanna seek out the train station for breakfast. Sounds weird, I know, but I ended up stopping by every day, it was close to my hotel. An abundance to choose from (it’s a big place), both hot and cold. Looked like the locals used it to pick up breakfast/lunch on their way to work.

  1. Such a pretty photo of that church! I have definitely had a meal or two in Munich Hauptbahnhof! 😉 But I somehow always find myself wandering towards the Hofbrauhaus….

    1. Thanks! Crossed the threshold of Hofbrauhaus, turned around, and left. Definitely not my kind of thing 🙂

  2. Haha what a way to start a blog post. I am glad that is the only thing you have in common with Hitler, though!! I loved my time in Munich last year. We visited in late November and all the Christmas markets were up.

    1. Ha ha, I thought it was a good opening 😀 Not much Christmas stuff up yet when I visited, but I did get to take a few things back home 😉

  3. We loved Munich! It is such a charming city and one of the best walkable cities. We did a walking tour of the area which included the Old Town and learned so much. Good tip about the train station – never would have thought of that.

    1. I am not too fond of those tours. I know I should be, because they are very explaining. I just like to explore by myself 🙂 I definitely love cities that are walkable! I stayed a couple of blocks away from the train station, I rarely have breakfast included, like to find local places to eat, and since I was on a tight budget this time, it was perfect 🙂
