On my leisurely stroll through the small village of Ollantaytambo, up in the Andean mountains, I happened to step into Awamaki, a store that sells quality products made by local artisan weavers. Not only was I happy about this chance meeting, but the people I brought home gifts for were some lucky misses 🙂 Awamaki was my first encounter with the social enterprise shops that I’ve come to love, and look for when I travel. There is nothing more rewarding to know that you, in this case, contribute to help women and girls with education and financial independence, and thereby their rural Peruvian communities out of poverty. In this case you also feel a stronger attachment, if you will, as each item has the artist’s name on the tag – such a great idea!

Yes yes yes!! I’ve been really into supporting social enterprises since I learned about them in my OT degree and took a tour to all the ones in Ljubljana. Good for you for shopping and empowering women at the same time!
I am getting more and more into it. Doesn’t have to be women, just communities that need it. And usually their products are super, so no reason not to!
I love that each artist has her name on her work!
Adds a great personal touch!
Beautiful textiles!!
Yes, and great cause too!
