Ship Ahoy!

on deck fram ship oslo norway

Fram is the ship that Roald Amundsen used on the expedition that was to be the first one to reach the South Pole. I am not much of a nautical person, but given the historical significance, I thought I owed it a visit, the Fram Museum in Oslo. Even though there are several floors surrounding the ship, like balconies, with information boards, the focal point is the ship. Even the building has been built to fit closely around the ship – pretty cool! Another thing that is neat is that this is a ship you can board, often old things you are not allowed to touch, not to mention go inside. And it is a really good idea until you get sea sick! Yes, you heard correctly 😀 First there is the smell, of old tar, the best way to describe it, and then there is the movement, it felt like the ship was out on the Seven Seas, it is so weird, when you know it is not moving an inch. I found it somewhat overwhelming to stand out on the deck of a big ship like this. A bit of a wow factor. Inside you get to see cabins, lounges, the cargo hold, the engine room, the galley and so on. Unfortunately my visit inside became a fairly short one. I just had to get away from the smell.

The Fram Museum is located outside central Oslo, but you can easily reach it by bus. I’d say it’ll take you 30 minutes or so to get there. Since this is one of five museums located in this residential neighbourhood, you can get a lot done on a roundtrip bus ticket (note that will be two single tickets in Oslo), as if you’re up to it, you can walk between the museums. A nice walk I would say. Well, maybe not in the wintertime. Just remember to walk from Norsk Folkemuseum and to the end of the road, where the Fram Museum is located, and not the other way around, as then you’ll face a steeper road to tread.

    1. I guess I loved that it was more “3D” than other old artefacts 😀 And that I got to stand out on deck, and get a glimpse into what it was like once upon a time.

  1. Nice, I have been there too. It is a very interesting place. It will show up some day in my blog. Still quite much in the queue…

      1. Haha, I used to add all my travel related things to VirtualTourist.com, but they were bought and eliminated by tripadvisor. So I started blogging now and concentrating on Northern Europe mainly, I frequently go to other places aswell of course, but it is my passion. 😉

        1. Can’t say I know Virtual Tourist. I tend to go anywhere but Northern Europe 🙂 I guess it’s just too close to home. Happy blogging!
