Lovin’ This Church!

church facade hallgrimskirkja reykjavik iceland

First time I saw a photo of Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik, I knew I had to put it on my list for visiting the Icelandic capital. The most impressive feature is without a doubt the exterior architectural expression. Have seen nothing like it! It’s a beauty! And in my opinion the interior doesn’t weaken the grandeur. It is the clean lines and colours, I guess lack of colours…, that pleases my eye. It has a calming feeling, and isn’t that what a church is to do? We (my mum and I) also climbed the bell tower. Nothing to see in the tower itself, but the views are nice! As we stepped inside to go back down, the bells went off. Deafening!

Hallgrimskirkja is located off the main street, but still easy to find. You have to pay a fee to access the tower. 350 Islandic krona (2007).

  1. I really like how “minimalistic” this church is. Of course it’s grand in it’s own way, but it’s features aren’t distracting. I agree- it’s calming!

    1. Me too! Might have been calming because of the lack of people ;), not many visiting when we did.

  2. I love this church too! I looks great in photos but I feel like it is really impressive when you are actually in front of it. There was a small concert happenings when I visited. That was beautiful!

    1. Yes, true. The exterior shape is even more impressive up front. Always fun to experience something different, like a concert.

  3. Ooh I know that church by sight! Such beautiful views from out front and from the top! There was an organ concert going on when I visited 🙂

    1. Yes, the views were great. Forgot about that, need to rewrite 😀 So much “closer” than the views from the Pearl, which were good too.

        1. Yes, we went upstairs. A nice view of the city, the harbour/ocean and the mountains. You got it all up close.

Love to hear your comment :)
