Whenever the name Georgetown was mentioned, I imagined stately buildings, old money, tweed jackets, and the likes – basically posh all around. Boy, was I surprised when I got off the bus on the main street of this Washington D.C. neighbourhood. All I could see was shops, shops and more shops. Not being in the mood for shopping, I sat down at a Häagen-Dazs for some ice cream and to make alternate plans. Where to go? What to do? Conclusion: Head for the Washington Harbour by the Potomac. It might have some nice views, as a consolation prize. Turning left on the main street is the best decision I have made. Right there another world lay waiting. Narrow streets, a canal, adorable rowhouses, cafes. A perfect place to go for a stroll. I might not have found the Georgetown I imagined, but I sure liked it. In the end I made it down to the harbour, which was a very quiet area, with nothing to see really, at least in the cold off-season.

I love that George Town completely took you by surprise! Thanks for linking to #MondayEscapes
First it took me by surprise in a “negative” way, and then it restored my faith in it 🙂
I love it when merely turning a corner leads to an area with an entirely different feel! I’ll be spending some time in DC in October and am hoping to explore a couple of its neighborhoods – maybe Georgetown will have to be on the list!
It was very nice to get off the main street. I guess my advise would be to do more research than I did, so you find the nice spots in Georgetown, because they felt kind of hidden. I am actually off to DC in October as well. Have decided to stay in Alexandria, VA, which I highly recommend. You’ll find a post on it here: https://www.beatravelling.com/2016/04/04/alexandria-virginia-usa/
Thank goodness for that corner and an alternative view. It’s always worth spending time seeking out the real gems of a destination! #MondayEscapes
Yes, if I hadn’t found this corner of Georgetown, I would have been so disappointed!
I always imagined Georgetown being full of history ( and restaurants )

There is a lot happening on the main street and at the harbour, but besides that, it is pretty quiet. And I don’t mind that, maybe just a little bit too quiet this time. If you go on guided tours, I reckon you’ll get a history lesson, I rarely do those, as I just like to walk around by myself and have a look at things I come across.
