Tall and Small

interior basilica our lady mount carmel church valletta malta island

Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Valletta, Malta, is somewhat of a contradiction. When you finally find it on the narrow street, squeezed in between regular looking buildings, you’re not quite sure you’ve come to the right place. Because from where you’re standing, it’s not much that reminds you of a church. But when you step inside, there’s a whole other perspective that opens up. And afterwards, when you walk away from the delicate interior, as far as to the other side of the harbour, in Sliema, you’ll see the church dome rise above the Valletta skyline, and realise how tall it in fact is. All this, and a photo of Jesus on the cross in my pocket, given to me by a lady inside the church. I am very far from a religious person, but for some reason I decided to hold on to it 🙂
