Constitution Hill is kind of a mishmash of things, surrounding Constitution Square are Number 4, Women’s Jail, Awaiting Trial Block, Old Fort, and Constitutional Court. I found it to be a mishmash in regards to the level of interest as well. Parts I really liked, other parts it wouldn’t have been a crime if I had skipped. Like Number 4, which is the prison where Gandhi was incarcerated. The prison cells are horrifying, but the other displays I didn’t find too engaging. Constitutional Court was for me the definite highlight, with its very unusual, artistic, expression. Very quirky, but utterly cool, art. Constitution Square was nice as well. The Old Fort was a prison for white prisoners and Mandela. It has a circling motte, on which you can go for a walk, and from there have a look at the neighbourhoods next door, like infamous Hillbrow. There’s also a cafe on the inside of the motte, but I didn’t find it appealing enough to bother. Apart from this, not much else to see at the fort. At this point, with the sites I had already visited in mind, I chose to ditch Women’s Jail and Awaiting Trial Block…

Yes, it is for sure necessary to visit, but some are better choices than others.

I thought other apartheid related sites throughout South Africa were more engaging than this place. Wouldn’t have been a crime to skip, but since I was there I might as well go inside.
