The Wonderful Apartheid Museum

apartheid museum johannesburg south africa

A title with contradictions, I know, but this museum is so exceptional, that to miss it will be a crime, a huge regret for the ones who do. And I was almost one of them. I was not gonna visit… But looking for things to do in Johannesburg, and with recommendations lingering in the back of my head, I decided to stop by. Best decision ever! Not only does the museum depict the rise and fall of the apartheid system through events and peoples’ stories, but it also does this through outstanding displays. Some which make you feel a minuscule part of apartheid yourself – when you’re handed your ticket, it tells you if you’re considered white or non-white/non-European, which again determines your rights, how you are to enter the museum. Just the beginning of a visit that, if it doesn’t make you stop and think, nothing will.

  1. What an unusual museum. I like that it documents the “fall” as well as the rise of apartheid. Sad, but something to learn about so we never forget.

    1. A very important focus to put. Love the expression through which they have decided to help us learn.

  2. I was definitely thinking your title was an oxymoron! But I get what you are saying – it is very important to learn about, especially, the terrible things in history.

    1. Good I got your attention. Mission accomplished 🙂 It is definitely important history to tell, and it is sad to see and hear what words were spoken back then. Theme aside, it is such a wonderful museum because of the creative displays and features.

  3. I love this museum, it’s such an important part of our country’s history. In the year that I went they had a special Mandela exhibition which was really great as well

Love to hear your comment :)
