Come for the Whales, Stay for Some More

hermanus south africa

The day trip to Hermanus from Cape Town was solely for the whales, but when approaching the centre of the village, I fell immediately in love. A cosy, little place boasting a stunning coastline, filled with cafes, restaurants and small shops. And hundreds of tourists… It was overcrowded! But imagine how wonderful it would have been to have a house there, to sit on the balcony and watch the whales offshore, when all the crazy tourists have left for the day.

Hermanus was the end destination for a day trip with African Eagle Day Tours. My guesthouse made the reservation, and I was very happy with the tour company. On the way down from Cape Town, after crossing over to False Bay, we followed the coastline all the way to Hermanus, passing Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay. A costal drive offering some very exquisite scenery. We also stopped by Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, which wasn’t particularly interesting as flowers were not blooming. On the way home we passed through Elgin Valley and Sir Lowry’s Pass.

  1. I love to go whale watching, but I’m usually not very lucky seeing whales. Every time I go I have high hopes though. Did you see many whales? #TheWeeklyPostcard

  2. It’s always so nice when places exceed our expectations and make us fall in love with it! Hermanus definitely looks like I would enjoy it! Thanks for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard!

    1. I had no expectation at all. Just wanted the others to go away, so I could have it all to myself 🙂

  3. We’ve heard several people say they loved Hermanus. It sounds quite nice, even if a little crowded. With the bonus of whale watching, definitely worth checking out! Thanks for joining us for #TheWeeklyPostcard.

  4. What type of whales did you see? I’d love to go whale-watching one day but what I really want to see is a blue whale. I think they tend to stay far away from land though, so it’ll be almost impossible!

    1. As far as I could see it was southern right whales. Yes, I imagine blue whales might be hard to spot. I enjoyed it a lot!

  5. I love doing whale watching! Did you see many whales? Nice to hear you also found a nice town to visit. Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.

Love to hear your comment :)
