Wine Country Minus the Wine

stellenbosch south africa

I had plans about going to Franschhoek, but after talking to my guesthouse hostess, I realised I was going to be better off heading to Stellenbosch for the day. Being a bigger town, also a university town, it would have more to offer than Franschhoek’s one street, considering I was not there for the wine. After being dropped off at a gas station by the Uber driver, I started to wonder if this had been a mistake. There were no small shops and cafes in sight, at all. When the only thing I found was a shopping mall, I though I’d better look for a tourist information office. And what a relief when I finally found them! They handed me a map, and pointed out the centre of town and the 3-4 streets (not more) where I could find cafes, restaurants and shops. And a great area it was! Small, but super. Lovely places to eat, and small shops to pick up great stuff. When I left I saw things I hadn’t seen when I got there. It felt like the town had awoken in the meantime.

I went from Cape Town by Uber. A 45 min drive one way. When I asked at my guesthouse how to get there, they told me there is a train going between the two places – said with a smile 🙂 Telling me that a 3rd class train is really bad, and 1st class is not much better than 3rd class. It might take 1-2 hours. One of ladies had never taken the train all the time she had lived in Cape Town. I guess Uber was a good way to go 🙂
