Feeling Local in Avarua

what to do see avarua rarotonga cook islands

So this is a bit of a contradiction, Avarua was my favorite village on Rarotonga, but it was hard to get a nice shot of the place… The centre of the Cook Islands capital is basically one road with a few short side streets, lined with cafes, hotels, shops, restaurants, a police station, a movie theater, scooter rentals and so on. Nothing exciting to see, just the bare necessities. But this is what creates the local vibe that I like. Real people living real lives. Not accommodating mainly to tourists. Not like Muri Beach on the east side of the island. On Saturday, though, when the  night market Punanga Nui Cultural Market is in full force, the tourists crawl out of the woodwork. I enjoy a good market, but filled to the rim with people, I don’t feel like diving in.

  1. I like the look of those colourful huts and I’m the same, I love a local vibe when I’m travelling. Thanks for sharing on #FarawayFiles
