This is my Yangon neighborhood! And I love it! One of my favorite things when travelling is staying in a part of town where you get to experience local life instead of a more generic approach. When I was searching for a hotel, one review said that there was nothing of significance in this area besides Shwedagon Pagoda. And the pagoda is very close and very present, but there is so much more. There are people living their everyday life. And you are lucky to be able to immerse yourself in it. When I had found my way home without getting lost a couple of times, and realized Google Maps would point me in the right direction if necessary, it was just go out and explore. One small street left, one small street right. You pass street stalls selling everything from food to birds you can release for luck, and you stumble upon beautiful structures of different kinds. You try to not bump into honking cars making their way through narrow streets in-between people, dogs, street vendors, oncoming traffic and the likes. It’s busy, but not stressful. And then there’s the smell to get used to, a blend of cooking food and sewage… ;D This exceptional corner of the world is outside the downtown grid, but I am so glad I decided to stay here both times, as a walk downtown was far from as interesting and vibrant as this.
This is so fab and what a way to see the world and experience cultures, thanks so much for linking up #MondayEscapes x
The best way!
I love your approach to seeing the world! I am also one of those people who prefers everyday lives, little details, and sensory perceptions over commodified tourist experiences. “Go out and explore”… exactly. Great photos too! #MondayEscapes
Thank you! I’m not too keen on other tourists :D, so I try to stay away from the crowds. But I also don’t want to miss out on the obvious must-sees. It’s a fine line 🙂
More amazing pictures and your story makes a wanderer itchy for more travels. Can I come by? 😛
Thanks again 🙂 Great country! Should definitely be on your bucket list 🙂
It’s probably included already, together with every other country.
Wise choice 🙂 What’s next on your list?
Now that’s a question! Cycling through Africa, teaching English in South-Korea, taking care of cows in New-Zealand… So many options, so many ideas, so many things I want. Who knows where I will end up.
Good luck to you whatever you choose 🙂
