A Teak Beauty

shwenandaw monastery mandalay myanmar

The Shwenandaw Monastery in Mandalay, also known as the Golden Palace Monastery, is close to Mandalay Hill and The World’s Biggest Book, so this is easily added to a day of sightseeing. It is pretty quick to go through as well. Because the beauty is on the outside. The incredible carvings. Inside it is kind of dark, so not easy to see a whole lot. The place is part of the Mandalay Archaeological Zone ticket. If you already have it, you should definitely stop by. If you don’t have the ticket, I’d say it’s 50/50, considering it is not a big structure. I think it is beautiful, but if it is worth 10.000 kyat (approx. 10 dollars) is up for discussion. I did fork over the money though…

  1. I agree, it looks like it’s worth it. What’s the history of the designs, is there a story there? Also, the comment about the World’s Biggest Book has intrigued me.

    1. Don’t think there’s a story behind the carvings, not that I’m aware of. It’s a former royal residence, which was moved away from the palace grounds when the king died, which saved it from the fire to come. World’s Biggest Book was a nice pagoda/picnic place 🙂

Love to hear your comment :)
