Luxembourg City: Yea or Nay…?

what to do luxembourg city sightseeing

In my opinion Luxembourg City is not worth much of your time – basically just stop by and check it off your “Where have I been” list. I guess I could go as far as to agree that it is an OK place to walk around to kill time, but spending hours there, I would consider a waste of said time. The cityΒ has one nice feature though – the Petrusse Valley park. Sadly I did not prioritize right and therefore did not go down into the valley to explore it further – nothing more than seeing it from above, from one of the city’s best lookout points, the Consitution Square, on top of the Beck Bastion. However from what I saw, it looked magnificent!Β I visited Luxembourg City in the midst of summer, and it was packed with people everywhere. As you might know by now, not my favorite surroundings πŸ™‚ All in all it’s not a place I believe I’ll be going back to… Luckily for us this was just a detour on our trip of Germany‘s Moselle and Rhine Valley.

    1. Thanks πŸ˜€ Started out only writing about the great things, but figured out it should portray my mishaps as well πŸ™‚ Yeah, one day is enough, in my opinion anyway πŸ™‚

  1. I like your ‘don’t beat around the bush’ approach. I visited Luxembourg as part of a road trip around Western Europe and would agree it can be done in a day. We walked through the valley park and I thought it was very picturesque #MondayEscapes

  2. My friend lives in Luxembourg. I visited her over New Year a few years ago and I really like it. Maybe it’s different if you have a local to show your around? The “Grund” area is really beautiful. On the Kirchberg (where a lot of the EU buildings are) there’s a really fascinating fortress. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your trip. #MondayEscapes

    1. For sure! I think every place is different if you have a local to tag along with. Yes, the Grund looked very nice, from above πŸ™‚ You win some, you loose some πŸ™‚

  3. I will like to visit even if it is as a day trip. I think part of the allure is that it is small and not visited that often (at least I do not read a lot of stories about the country).

  4. I happen to have relatives in Luxembourg so I’ve visted many times over the past 20years! Indeed the valley (the Grund as they call it) is a very nice place to visit. I’ve took the train (with audio guide) that goes down the valley. The ride was nice but didn’t make much of what the audio guide said (it was in the form of a story) plus I was about 10 at the time! Luxembourg is so small that you can see all of it in a day! There are some nice villages ones can visit like Remich and Echternach!

  5. I’m surprised to hear this! My husband has a client in Luxembourg so we’ve traveled there twice, my daughter and I exploring while he worked. I actually consider it very high on my list of places to recommend, it has a lot of the classic Europe feel without any of the tourists. Being such an expat city it also has the convenience of English being very common, making travel really easy (though this is true of many major cities these days!). We like to “move in” to cities we visit though and pretend to live there, and focus less on attractions and sites and more on little local parks, coffee shops, etc. Maybe that accounts for the difference in opinion?

    1. It is definitely classic European, and I guess that’s what the “problem” is for me. There’s no extraordinary about it. Maybe I have seen too many of those kind of places… And maybe we visited at different times of the year. I was there in the middle of summer, and it was packed with tourists, maybe not in numbers, but considering the size of the place. I never find language (I only speak English in addition to Norwegian) a problem when travelling around Europe, except for rural areas and France πŸ™‚ ). I didn’t have any particular plan, I just wanted to stroll around and take in the place. I guess some like the mother and some like the daughter πŸ™‚ And that’s a good thing! Have a great summer!

    1. Thanks πŸ™‚ I hate wasting my precious time on the road, so if I can help people get a clearer view on what to do and not to do, I’m a happy camper!

Love to hear your comment :)
