Personally I find the Roman Forum to be one of the most splendid attractions in Rome. Despite the deterioration, there is still a lot of well-preserved ruins left to give you an impression of what have been once upon a time. And when you find yourself standing on what was once a road in front of one of the magnificent colonnades, you realise the grandness of it all! I suggest you start your walk through the forum with the incredible overview from Capitoline Hill, then make your way down to the ruins, and straight ahead through the former center of Rome. At the end, another highlight will reveal itself – the magnificent Colosseum!
